Claude Code pricing
Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent, comes with every paid Claude plan, starting with Pro at $20 a month. You can also pay per token through Anthropic’s API instead. Anthropic says the average across companies using it is about $13 per developer per active day, or $150 to $250 a month.

How plan limits work
Plans don’t charge per token. Instead, usage limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly limits on top. Claude Code and your chats draw from the same pool. Anthropic gives no fixed number of messages: what you can do depends on the model, the length of the work and the features you use.
When you hit a limit, you can wait for it to reset, move to a bigger plan, or, on paid plans, turn on usage credits and keep working at standard API rates. Anthropic adds that it may limit usage in other ways, such as weekly or monthly caps.
Paying per token instead
With an API account in the Claude Console, Claude Code bills for every token at these prices, per 1M tokens. You can cap spending with workspace spend limits.
| Model | Input | Cached input | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4.00 | $0.20 | $20.00 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2.00 | $0.10 | $10.00 |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.01 | $0.50 |
| Claude Fable 5.1 | $10.00 | $0.25 | $50.00 |
Claude Haiku 5.5 costs more on prompts over 100,000 tokens. Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud also bill Claude Code per token, at prices on their own pages; see AWS Bedrock pricing. More detail on Claude API pricing.
What developers actually spend
Anthropic’s figures across enterprise deployments, measured at API rates. Costs vary with the model, the size of the codebase and how many sessions run at once. Anthropic suggests a small pilot before a wider rollout.
A plan or pay as you go?
A plan fixes what you pay each month; the API charges for exactly what you use. Anthropic’s average spend at API rates, $150 to $250 a month, is more than Pro or the cheapest Max plan costs. But plans come with usage limits that Anthropic doesn’t state in tokens, so the two can’t be matched exactly. If you code with it most days, try a plan and watch whether you reach its limits. If you use it now and then, or run it in automated jobs, paying per token keeps the bill tied to use.
Inside Claude Code, the /usage command shows the session’s token use and cost at list price, which helps you estimate what pay-as-you-go would cost.
