AI Christmas photo prompt builder

The AI Christmas photo trend works like this: you upload an everyday photo of your family, partner, kids or pet to ChatGPT or Google Gemini, describe a Christmas scene, and the app redraws the photo in it. Both apps do this on their free plans. Pick your scene below, copy the prompt and paste it in with your photo.

Your prompt

Open ChatGPT or Gemini, add your photo, paste the prompt and send it. Nothing you choose or type here leaves your browser.

How to make an AI Christmas photo

  1. Pick a sharp photo. Faces that are large, in focus and evenly lit come out most like the real people. If you can, use one photo with everyone in it rather than several.
  2. Open ChatGPT or Gemini in the app or on the web. A free account is enough to start.
  3. Add the photo with the attach button, then paste your prompt and send it.
  4. Fix one thing at a time. Ask for a single change, such as “make the lights warmer and keep everything else the same.” If a face drifts, ask it to keep that person exactly as in the original photo, or start a new chat from the original.
  5. Check before you share or print. AI pictures often get small details wrong: fingers, eyes, the pattern on a sweater and any words.

A family by the tree in matching pajamas
Create a Christmas picture of my family in front of a tall decorated Christmas tree with warm white lights and wrapped presents underneath, using the photo I uploaded. Make it a realistic photo, like a professional holiday photo shoot, with soft natural light and a gently blurred background. Dress everyone in matching red plaid Christmas pajamas. Keep every person’s face, hair, skin tone and expression exactly as in my photo, so everyone is clearly recognizable. Use a vertical 2:3 shape, with a little space around the edges for printing as a card. Make hands, eyes and teeth look natural, and don’t add anyone else to the group.
A couple at a Christmas market, on film
Create a Christmas picture of the two of us at a Christmas market at night, with wooden stalls, strings of lights and a big tree in the square, using the photo I uploaded. Make it a realistic photo that looks like it was taken on 1990s film, with warm colors and soft grain. Dress us both in winter coats, scarves and knitted hats. Keep both our faces, hair, skin tones and expressions exactly as in my photo, so we are both clearly recognizable. Use a square shape. Make hands, eyes and teeth look natural, and don’t add anyone else next to us.
Kids with Santa
Create a Christmas picture of my children with Santa Claus in his workshop, surrounded by toys and twinkling lights, using the photo I uploaded. Make it a realistic photo, like a professional holiday photo shoot, with soft natural light and a gently blurred background. Dress the children in cozy knitted Christmas sweaters. Keep each child’s face, hair, skin tone and expression exactly as in my photo, so every child is clearly recognizable. Use a vertical 2:3 shape, with a little space around the edges for printing as a card. Make hands, eyes and teeth look natural, and don’t add any other children.
A dog by the fireplace, as a watercolor card
Create a Christmas picture of my dog beside a stone fireplace with stockings on the mantel, in a cozy living room lit by the fire, using the photo I uploaded. Make it a soft watercolor illustration, like a hand-painted Christmas card. Put a red knitted scarf on my dog. Keep my dog’s face, fur colors and markings exactly as in my photo. Use a vertical 2:3 shape, with a little space around the edges for printing as a card. Make it look natural, and don’t add any other animals.
A family card with your name on it

Make it a vintage 1950s Christmas postcard illustration. Dress everyone in cozy knitted Christmas sweaters. Give our dog a knitted Christmas sweater to match. Keep every person’s face, hair, skin tone and expression exactly as in my photo, so everyone is clearly recognizable. Keep our dog’s face, fur colors and markings exactly as in my photo. Use a vertical 2:3 shape, with a little space around the edges for printing as a card. Add the words “Merry Christmas from the Garcias” in elegant gold lettering along the bottom, spelled exactly like that. Make hands, eyes and teeth look natural, and don’t add anyone else to the group.
A phone wallpaper of you in the snow
Create a Christmas picture of me outdoors in gently falling snow, in a pine forest at dusk, using the photo I uploaded. Make it a realistic photo that looks like it was taken on 1990s film, with warm colors and soft grain. Dress me in a winter coat, scarf and knitted hat. Keep my face, hair, skin tone and expression exactly as in my photo, so I am clearly recognizable. Use a tall 9:16 shape for a phone screen, with me in the lower two-thirds, below where the clock shows. Make hands, eyes and teeth look natural, and don’t add anyone else next to me.

Free or paid: what AI Christmas photos cost

Making pictures in the apps, prices a month

Paid plansGo $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100Google AI Plus $4.99, Google AI Pro $19.99, Google AI Ultra from $99.99

Free plans come with tighter usage limits than paid ones, so a long run of retries may have to wait. Google’s paid plans also give more use of its Nano Banana Pro image model.

Making a lot of them, say for a photo stand or a small business? Through the companies’ APIs you pay per picture. A hundred pictures cost about $5.04 with Google’s Nano Banana 2.1 at 2K, $13.40 with Nano Banana Pro, and $4.10 with OpenAI’s GPT Image 2 at 1024 × 1536 pixels and medium quality ($16.50 at high), plus a small charge for the photos and prompts you send. More sizes and models: Nano Banana pricing.

Printing it as a Christmas card

Ask for a vertical picture with some space around the edges; most print shops can then crop it to a 5 × 7 inch card. Check the pixel size first: a sharp 5 × 7 print at 300 dots per inch needs about 1,500 × 2,100 pixels. A picture of 1,024 × 1,536 pixels still prints well at 4 × 6 inches, at about 250 dots per inch.

Before you upload photos of your family

Your photo goes to the company that runs the app. Google’s Gemini privacy hub says that if your Keep Activity setting is on, photos you upload from your phone’s gallery are used to improve Google’s services, with the help of human reviewers. OpenAI explains how ChatGPT uses what you upload in its privacy policy. Check your settings before uploading photos of children.

Questions

What app is everyone using for AI Christmas photos?

Usually ChatGPT or Google Gemini (Gemini’s image models are known as Nano Banana). Both let you upload a photo and ask for a Christmas version of it, and both are free to try. Photo apps with Christmas filters are another option.

Can I make AI Christmas photos for free?

Yes. ChatGPT’s and Gemini’s free plans both make and edit pictures, within their usage limits. Paid plans, from $4.99 a month for Google AI Plus or $8 for ChatGPT Go, let you make more.

Why doesn’t the AI picture look like us?

The app draws a new picture rather than editing your pixels, so faces can drift. Start from a sharp, well-lit photo, keep the line in the prompt that tells it to keep every face as in your photo, and ask for changes one at a time.

Can AI put people from different photos into one Christmas picture?

Often, yes: upload the photos together and ask for one group picture. Tick “more than one photo” in the builder to add that to the prompt. The more people, the more likely a face comes out wrong, so check each one.
